Give your clothes new life with Rit Dye, and you can dye at home like a pro.

Do you want to transform a washed-out garment into something new? Or have you found a second-hand find in the wrong color? With Rit Dye you can dye clothes at home. Fast, durable and with impressive results.

Rit has been dyeing clothes since 1916 and is still the first choice for designers and beginners alike. Here we guide you step by step – whether you work with cotton, linen or synthetics.

1. Choose the right Rit Dye – All-Purpose or DyeMore?

The first thing you need to know: Rit has two types of fabric paint.

  • All-Purpose Dye is suitable for cotton, linen, viscose, rayon, silk, wool and to some extent nylon. (Available in both powder and liquid form)
  • DyeMore for Synthetics is developed for polyester, acrylic, acetate and blends with a high proportion of synthetics.

Tip: If you are unsure about the material, check the wash tag and keep in mind that synthetic fabrics often require a higher water temperature when dyeing.

2. Prepare the garment carefully

For best results, wash the garment in warm water without fabric softener. This will remove surface treatments that may interfere with the dyeing process.

3. Time to color

You can use a bucket, tub, sink, stove, or washing machine. Here are the basics:

  • Water: Approximately 60–70 °C (for All-Purpose). For DyeMore, almost boiling water is required.
  • Dosage: One bottle of liquid dye (or two bags of powder) for approximately 500–1000 g of fabric.
  • Salt: Add 1 dl salt for cotton/linen, 1 dl vinegar for silk/wool.
  • Dishwashing liquid: A splash helps spread the paint evenly.
  • Agitation: Keep the garment moving for at least 10–30 minutes for even color.

4. Fix the color – for best durability

Use Rit ColorStay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing. It seals the color and reduces the risk of fading in the wash.

5. Rinse & dry

Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear. Then wash separately in the washing machine with mild detergent. Air dry.
